Who Wears It
The story behind the bottle.
The old English word "joss" means an incense stick, and Amandine Clerc-Marie took that literally when she built this 2019 composition for Atkinsons. The opening is ceremonial and sharp — smoke, pink pepper, nutmeg — a kind of ritual heat that hits the nose before the fragrance has settled. Then it drops into gardenia, ylang-ylang, and peach, and the whole character shifts: those are not delicate florals, they are heavy, tropical, almost narcotic, the kind of bloom you smell in a humid greenhouse rather than a spring meadow. The tension between the incense-sharp top and the fleshy, warm floral heart is what gives the scent its gravity.
Beneath it all, patchouli, sandalwood, amber, and a thread of iris create a powdery, resinous base that holds the composition for hours. Atkinsons, a house tracing its roots to a London soap-and-perfume shop opened in 1799 and later appointed royal perfumer, has always favoured bold, unapologetic composition. The Joss Flower fits that lineage: a scent with strong sillage that does not ask permission to be noticed.
The pink-pepper and smoke top projects hard for the first twenty minutes — one spray fills a room, so resist the urge to double up. After that hour, the gardenia and amber pull close to skin, so a light second pass on the pulse points keeps the warmth alive through the evening. The patchouli and sandalwood base lingers on fabric for a full day.
