You reach for this the night after a gallery opening — leather jacket still on, pepper on your breath, the kind of scent that lingers because you refuse to wash it off.

The story behind the bottle.
The first thing 1996 Inez & Vinoodh does is hit you with juniper berries and black pepper sharp enough to taste — a botanical, almost gin-like snap that gives way, within twenty minutes, to the real composition. What arrives is a collision: dry leather and orris powder over patchouli and black amber, vanilla threading through the base like a low hum. The animalic edge keeps it from reading as costume; it feels more like a worn-in jacket than a museum piece.
Ben Gorham built this in 2013 for Byredo, his Stockholm house, and named it for two people and a year — the kind of specific reference that reads as a memory rather than a marketing decision. The fragrance itself is unisex in the way that matters: it doesn't soften for anyone. Strong sillage, long-lasting, it announces itself the way a striking image does — you notice it before you can say why.
The juniper and pepper top is loud for the first twenty minutes, then the leather-patchouli-amber base takes over and stays for the full eight-plus hours — one spray on the chest is enough given the sillage. The orris and violet powdery layer takes about an hour to surface, so don't judge it by the first impression. It reads better on bare skin than under fabric; the animalic edge gets muffled under a coat.
