The story behind the bottle.

Scentsation editorial

The paprika and caraway in No. 1 do something unusual for a men's fragrance: they turn the spice register savory, almost peppery, before the iris and heliotrope powder it down into something that reads as old-money barbershop rather than kitchen. Clive Christian built this in 2001 as the flagship of a house tracing its lineage to Crown Perfumery, a London house dating to 1872 that once carried Queen Victoria's royal warrant — and the composition carries that inheritance in its sheer density.

The white florals never read as delicate here; jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, and ylang-ylang are thick, slightly waxy, more like pressed petals in a heavy perfume box. Underneath, sandalwood, amber, tonka, and vetiver don't so much settle as accumulate. It is a fragrance that wants the room to notice it.

How to wear it

One spray is genuinely enough — the sillage is strong and the amber-tonka-vetiver base builds over two hours into something that fills a small room. The citrus and paprika top burn off within twenty minutes, so if you want the savory edge, add a second spray at the pulse points early. Skip it for close-quarters office wear; this one announces itself before you do.
