The story behind the bottle.

Scentsation editorial

Hermessence Ambre Narguile by Hermès was launched in 2004 and created by Jean-Claude Ellena. This fragrance is an olfactory poem that captures the ambiance of Eastern markets, where nargiles swirl with smoke infused with honey, spices, and fruit. The composition opens with a sweet and warm spicy accord, featuring cinnamon, amber, and honey, before deepening into notes of vanilla, caramel, and rum. Ellena’s vision was to recreate the intoxicating atmosphere of these lively places, blending tobacco-infused scents with the lush sweetness of fruits and spices.

How to wear it

Apply this fragrance in light spritzes to avoid overpowering its complex layers. The rich amber base develops gradually over time, so it’s best to let it settle for at least half an hour before heading out.

Jean-Claude Ellena

The perfumer of transparency

Jean-Claude Ellena is widely regarded as the most intellectual perfumer of the modern era — a minimalist poet whose work redefined what fragrance could be.

“Cézanne's watercolours contain areas of wash that don't overlap. I proceed in a similar fashion.”
