Launched in 2010 by Amouage, Memoir Woman is a chypre fragrance that challenges the conventional with its gothic-leaning approach. Created by Daniel Maurel and Dorothée Piot, it eschews traditional oakmoss-citrus structures for a smoky, burnt-tobacco/leather accord that defines its character. The composition opens with wormwood and cardamom, adding warmth and spice to the mix before settling into a base of leather, castoreum, and musk. This unconventional take on chypre has earned Memoir Woman a strong cult reputation among enthusiasts for its dark, complex personality.
Apply this fragrance in thin layers to allow its complex notes to unfold gradually. The smoky and leather elements take time to bloom, so it’s best suited for evenings or special occasions where you have time to let the scent evolve on your skin.
