The story behind the bottle.
Launched in 1999 by Calvin Klein and crafted by perfumers Carlos Benaïm and Pierre Wargnye, Contradiction is a composition that embodies the brand’s signature minimalism with a twist. The fragrance opens with a bright citrus-aromatic accord of lime, lemon, and mandarin orange, juxtaposed against warm spices like pepper, cardamom, and nutmeg. This initial contrast gives way to a heart of lavender and clary sage, which adds an herbal freshness before settling into a woody, musky base of vetiver, sandalwood, ebony wood, and musk. The result is a scent that feels both familiar and surprising, embodying the brand’s classic elegance while pushing boundaries.
Contradiction’s citrus opening fades within two hours, so aim for a heavier first application to capture its initial brightness. The woody base notes take about an hour to fully emerge, making it ideal for daytime wear when you want a scent that evolves throughout the day.
