Who Wears It
The story behind the bottle.
Black pepper and cardamom hit first in Nu — Jacques Cavallier Belletrud's 2001 composition for Yves Saint Laurent — but they're a prelude, not the point. Within twenty minutes the top gives way to frankincense, sandalwood, and vetiver, and the fragrance becomes something closer to a liturgical space than a perfume: orchid and jasmine suspended in warm resin, the whole thing wrapped in amber and musk that lingers for hours.
It was a bold move for a women's EDP in 2001, when the category still expected sweetness or soft florals. Nu instead built its architecture from resin and spice, the kind of composition that reads as confident rather than decorative. The strong sillage isn't accidental — it's the point. You don't wear Nu to be noticed from across the room; you wear it to make the room feel smaller.
One spray on the pulse points is enough — the sillage is strong and the frankincense-and-vetiver base takes an hour before it claims the composition, so resist the urge to reapply early. The pepper and bergamot top is brief; what lasts is the resinous warmth that builds slowly and stays close to skin for a full day.
