The story behind the bottle.
Launched in 2009, Opium Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent is a substantial reformulation of the iconic 1977 original. The new version, composed under Antoine Maisondieu, offers a smoother, more incense and amber-forward character, which some critics praise for its approachability compared to the denser vintage formula. This update was driven largely by IFRA restrictions on allergens like eugenol, making the clove-heavy original impossible to maintain. The composition balances citrus brightness with warm spices and rich florals, creating a complex yet cohesive scent that is both modern and nostalgic.
This fragrance blooms gradually over time, so apply it lightly to avoid an overwhelming initial burst. The amber and patchouli base notes take about an hour to fully emerge, making this scent ideal for evening wear or a night out where warmth and depth are appreciated.
