The story behind the bottle.
Launched in 2014, Velvet Orchid by Tom Ford is an Oriental Floral fragrance created by Yann Vasnier, Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu, and Antoine Maisondieu. This composition opens with a distinctive rum-and-honey accord that gives it a quasi-gourmand character atypical of the brand's more traditionally 'oriental floral' women's line. The honeyed warmth is balanced by a heart of black orchid, jasmine, heliotrope, hyacinth, rose oil, narcissus, magnolia, and orange blossom, before settling into a base of vanilla, myrrh, suede, sandalwood, Peru balsam, and labdanum. Velvet Orchid has garnered both praise for its richness and criticism for being overly sweet or boozy.
Apply Velvet Orchid to pulse points for maximum warmth. The rum-and-honey opening is intense but fades within two hours, revealing the powdery floral heart that lingers close to skin. Ideal for evenings or cooler weather when its richness can be fully appreciated.
