Launched in 2024, Black Opium Over Red by Yves Saint Laurent is a Floral Fruity Gourmand fragrance that has sparked polarized reviews. Created by perfumers Honorine Blanc, Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, and Olivier Cresp, this cherry-vanilla flanker of the iconic Black Opium is often compared to Tom Ford's Lost Cherry but at a much more accessible price point. The composition opens with green mandarin and cherry, leading into jasmine and orange blossom before settling on a base of black tea, vanilla, coffee, and patchouli leaf. While some praise its innovative blend of cherry into the signature Black Opium DNA, others find it thin and lacking in depth compared to the original.
Apply one or two sprays to ensure the cherry note doesn't overpower. The scent blooms best close to skin rather than filling a room, so aim for pulse points like wrists and neck. It's better suited for cooler evenings when the warmth of the vanilla and patchouli can shine through without being overwhelming.
